Settling In

To help your child settle into nursery, the staff will work with parents to build up a good parent partnership relationship. Our induction pack for new children will help to build the foundations of this. The staff will follow your child's routine as much as possible, although sometimes the child will change their pattern, if for example lots of exciting activities are being carried out.

The first settling in session is free for you and your child and then both the nursery staff and parents will work together to settle the child as quickly and painlessly as possible.

  • Before a child starts to attend the setting, we use a variety of ways to provide his/her parents with information. These include written information (including our prospectus and policies), displays about activities available within the setting, information days/evenings and individual meetings with parents.
  • We allocate a key person to each child and his/her family before he/she starts to attend. The key person welcomes and looks after the child along with his/her parents at the child's first session and during the settling-in process.
The settling in period is usually carried out a week before they are due to start their normal hours of attendance but if you are still apprehensive after their first session, extra sessions can be booked (where spaces are available)
  • Younger children will take longer to settle in, as will children who have not previously spent time away from home. Children who have had a period of absence may also need their parent to be on hand to re-settle them.
  • We judge a child to be settled when they have formed a relationship with their key person. For example the child looks for the key person when he/she arrives, go to them for comfort and seems to be pleased to be with them. The child is also familiar with where things are and is pleased to see other children and participate in activities.
"In accordance with the Preschool Learning Alliance" During this period, if there are any problems or concerns, the staff will ring you and you are free to ring us at any time to see how your child is progressing.

Personal Care

Whilst at nursery the staff will ensure a safe and secure environment for your child and maintain their personal care at all times. This will be carried out by:

Nappy changing

  • Every 2 hours minimum plus whenever necessary
  • The use of gloves and aprons when changing your child
  • Creams applied to a child where applicable
  • Changing mat to be sprayed with cleaning agent after every use
  • Nappy to be disposed of in domestic waste bins at the end of sessions
  • Please note if your child does not like having their nappy changed, the nursery staff will calm and reassure them and make the experience a relaxing, social time to share together
Potty training

Lily's nursery will work in partnership with you and will encourage potty training at nursery. There are potties available, which are cleaned on a regular basis. All toilets and sinks are at a child's level too.
